Broughty Ferry, once called the "richest square mile in Europe" because of
the many fine mansions built there by jute barons. The Broughty Ferry Museum
is at Castle Green, and housed within a 15th century castle built by the
Earl of Angus in the late 15th century as a defence against marauding English
ships. It has displays on local history, and tells the story of Dundee's
former whaling fleet, at one time Britain's largest. If you visit Broughty
Ferry at New Year, you can see the annual N'erday Dook ("New Year's Day Dip")
held on January 1, when swimmers enter the waters of the Firth of Tay. The
dip is usually done for charity, and it is not unknown for bystanders to
be wrapped up in warm woollens, scarves and gloves as the swimmers enter
the water dressed only in swimsuits.
